What to do if the camera cannot be powered by the POE switch?

Causes and Solutions

The possible causes and corresponding solutions are as follows:

  • The camera model does not support being powered up by POE switch

    Please verify the power supply requirements of the camera.

  • The camera fails to start properly when the PC’s Ethernet port is connected to the PoE port of the PoE switch

    Cause Description

    In some PCs, the Ethernet port’s network cable is short-circuited to the ground wire of its 3-wire AC plug. When such a PC is connected via a network cable to the PoE port of a PoE switch with a 3-wire AC plug (as shown in the figure below), the common internal circuit topology of PoE switches causes a short-circuit protection in the PoE system. This prevents the PoE switch from supplying power externally.

    Solutions:

    • Solution 1: Use a PoE switch with a 2-pin AC plug.

    • Solution 2: Connect the PC’s Ethernet port to the Uplink port of the PoE switch with a 3-wire AC plug.

    • Solution 3: Connect the PC’s Ethernet port to a regular switch, and then connect the camera to a PoE switch. Connect the Uplink port of the PoE switch to the regular switch.
